Midland League Junior Men Champions

Jon Lane28 Mar - 10:11

Final game decides league 2025

In a tense encounter our U18 team narrowly edged ahead in a hard battle between two very evenly matched teams.
Q1(1-2) although striking early Iolo's goal was the only mark on the score sheet against the Cheltenham's keeper and recently released GB player. Cheltenham's top scorer with 34 Alfie Clarke succeeding to find the target. Neither team managed to convert their man-up advantages.
Q2(2:1, 3-3) After going another goal down after 1:40 sec Ollie and Iolo managed to pull the quarter back after 4 min 40 seconds to finish evens. Every mistake at this level could lead to a goal - and both teams knew it.
Q3(1:1, 4-4) The battle of chess continued Dawid applying pressure with a goal after 36 seconds a lead that we kept until 43 seconds from the end of the period when Alfie found the target again. All man up advantages were nullified by the defending teams or keepers - no body was giving an inch protecting their cage at all costs. Cheltenham's final goal the result of a counter attack from a saved extra player Northampton attack.
Q4(2:1, 6-5) Starting in the best way possible - a converted penalty after 17 seconds allowed a slight breath to be taken - but both teams were playing with the same tempo in the final quarter as the first. After the 3rd Northampton exclusion Alfie found the net for the last time in the game scoring his third and tying the score 5-5. (3:13 sec to play) Just after the last minuet bell a drive into the 2m line resulted in a penalty converted by the steady arm of Iolo Roberts, his 4th goal of the night. Cheltenham were unable to recover and after calling a time out to run a set play after a Northampton exclusion on 36 seconds the clock ran down.

For the first time in the history of the club we have managed to win the league at this age group. A difficult feat given the quality of the teams, but hopefully one we will be able to repeat.
